List of Chemistry Lab Apparatus and its Uses

Beaker – A beaker is a glass container with a flat bottom and a small spout. It is used in chemistry laboratories to mix, heat and stir liquids. The cups come in different sizes and have the shape of a cylinder.

Bunsen Furnace – A Bunsen burner is a metal tube that produces a flame from gases such as methane, propane, or butane. It is used in the laboratory for heating and sterilization. The Bunsen incinerator is named after the German chemist Robert Bunsen.

Crucible – A crucible is a vessel used to heat substances to very high temperatures. They are usually made from materials such as porcelain, nickel, and aluminum.

Erlenmeyer flask – This is a chemical flask with a conical body, a cylindrical neck and a flat bottom. It usually has measurement marks on the side. It is similar to a glass cup, but has a conical body. The tapered shape reduces evaporation loss and helps prevent spills when stirring liquids.

Funnel – A funnel is a tube with a wide mouth that allows substances to be poured into the container without spilling out. In chemistry laboratories, funnels are often used with filters to separate mixtures.

Gloves – It is important to wear laboratory gloves to protect the skin from chemicals. Always listen to your teacher and remember to wear gloves when performing experiments.

Safety Glasses – Safety glasses are very important when performing allkinds of experiments. They can block dangerous chemicals and other substances from harming your eyes. Always wear safety goggles in the lab!

Graduated flask – A large, thin cylinder used to measure volume. In general, this is a more accurate way of measuring volume than a regular cup or flask.

Mortar and pestle – Mortar and pestle are used for crushing and grinding solids into powder. The mortar is a bowl and the pestle is a small tool resembling a club. They are usually made from ceramic or stone.

Pipette – A narrow glass tube used to transfer liquids from one place to another. Pipettes are sometimes used for measurement. The accuracy of different pipettes varies widely.

Scoopula – A spoon is a metal spoon-like instrument used to scoop up solids such as powders in a chemistry lab.

Stirring Rod – A thin solid glass rod used in chemistry to mix chemicals and liquids. The stirrer is usually about the length of a long straw and has rounded tips.

Test Tube – A test tube is a glass or plastic tube used to hold, mix, and heat small amounts of liquid chemicals. Test tubes often have a flared top for easy pouring. They have many different sizes.

Test Tube Holder – The rack is designed to hold multiple test tubes.

Test Tube Brush – The brush is designed to help clean test tubes.

Test Tube Clamps – Clamps hold test tubes while using them to heat chemicals in a lab experiment.

Thermometer – An instrument used to measure the temperature of a substance.

Triangle – A triangle made of clay pipes and wire that can withstand high temperatures. It is often used to hold a crucible.

Wire gauze – A wire gauze is used to support the cup or flask when heated. Steel mesh helps distribute heat evenly.
