Why do they stand on one leg?
Scientists aren’t 100% sure why flamingos stand on one leg, but they have a few theories. They say it’s to keep feet warm. In cold weather, they may keep one leg close to their body to keep warm. Another idea is that they dry the feet one by one. A third theory is that it helps them deceive their prey, since one leg looks more like a tree than two.
Whatever the reason, it’s amazing how these very heavy pigeons can balance on one leg for hours at a time. They even sleep balancing on one leg!
