The Virgin Islands is a group of about 90 islands, bays and rocks in the West Indies located about 40 to 50 miles (64 to 80 kilometers) east of Puerto Rico. The islands is around 90 miles from west to east and lie west of the Anegada passage, the main strait connecting the Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean Sea. The total land area is approximately 195 square miles (505 square kilometers).
